In the 12 years since those experiences, I have continued to spend time alone with God every month at various retreat centers. It was amazing! The next month, I went on a 30-day silent retreat. I accepted the call and went on a week-long silent retreat. But the call to silence was clear and persistent. Given the fact that I am extremely extraverted, it seemed odd. The only thing I knew for sure was that even though I attended church regularly and had a strong faith life, I was being called to come away, be silent, and grow closer to God. My only child left to go to college in August and my dad died in September. So, being able to be part of the Benedictine Center feels like home to me. To my surprise, they have been a huge part of my ongoing formation as an adult. (Gwen Pickering is open to receiving new spiritual directees at this time.) The Benedictine sisters were part of my early faith formation.
